| The organization Solar City Copenhagen has been initiated by a number of public and private players within the field of solar energy.
The basis of this initiative is the wish to establish Copenhagen and the Oresund Region as a demonstration and development area for solar energy systems and energy optimization.
The goal is to set up Copenhagen as a pioneer city within this field – nationally as well as internationally – and to provide the basis for a development of the building industry which not only relates to quality in architecture and technology, but eventually puts us in the lead when it comes to the reduction of the building’s energy consumption and the incorporation of solar energy systems.
At the present Copenhagen occupies a leading role among European countries when it comes to electric power generated heat, due to the extended district heating network. The establishment of the Middelgrunden Wind Turbine Co-operative means that a minor part of the energy now comes from renewable energy sources. However, when it comes to solar energy and energy-optimization of the building industry, Copenhagen still lags behind compared to many European cities.
A number of demonstration and development projects have been implemented in order to boost the use of solar cells in the Copenhagen building industry, but it is necessary to increase the efforts in order to establish the city’s position as an actual development centre within the region. The object of the organization Solar City Copenhagen is to facilitate this development.
THE OBJECTIVES AND VISION AF THE ORGANIZATION As an organization Solar City Copenhagen strives to secure the city an international position through demonstration projects which deal with solar energy systems and energy optimization within the building industry.
The overall objective of the organization is to contribute to a more sustainable and CO2 neutral energy supply. The plan is to make this happen by way of: • promoting the implementation and development of solar cell and solar heating systems • ensuring public awareness through information and involvement • encouraging co-operation within the field of solar energy – regionally and internationally
The aim will be pursued through an increase in co-operation between a wide range of interested parties: public and municipal institutions, private companies, building owners, investors, banks and credit institutions, hardware producers, architects and consultants, research institutions and schools, housing associations and residents, etc.
The organization will work at:
1. Ensuring that a major part of the electricity used in Copenhagen stems from solar cell systems, and stimulating an increase in energy optimization 2. Stimulating the development of solar energy systems which are aesthetically and technically suited for application and incorporation in buildings in Copenhagen
3. Improving the support and financing options for solar energy
4. Promoting a national plan of action for solar energy
5. Promoting a certificated energy and environment marking of buildings
6. Supporting the Valby Solar Plan
7. Ensuring – through information and debate – that the work of the organization has a solid public and political foundation
8. Stimulating an increase in education and research efforts concerning solar energy and energy optimized building
THE EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE TARGET AREAS - STRATEGY AND PLAN OF ACTION The committee will arrange for a more explicit strategy and plan of action to be drawn up in order to meet the vision and objective of the organization. This will include a specification of the organization’s activities as well as budgets and time schedules.
The plan will comprise the following elements: • programme for the activities and structure of the organization, including the cooperation with and relation to similar activities, procurement of new members, setting of dues, setting up of a secretariat and miscellaneous working groups, information of members, organizing of events, excursions, etc. • plan and strategy for the realization of demonstration and development projects in relation to public and private building projects • drawing up of a strategy and plan of action for support and financing of network-based solar cell systems with reference to local, national and international support measures, Copenhagen Energy’s solar generated power as well as special measures via fundraising, solar cell co-operatives, etc. • strategy and plan for information as well as financing of these activities. The plan will cover specification of target groups, prioritizing of target groups, methods and means of information of target groups as well as content and design of newsletters, website, pamphlets, etc. • schedule and plan of action for co-operation with schools, technical schools and research institutions • schedule and plan of action for international co-operation (in a European or Nordic context) • schedule and plan of action for support of the Valby Solar Plan
SUPPORT The executive committee will ensure that the organization diffuses information and instigates debate, and moreover forms a basis for contact with building owners, developers, etc. Anybody may become a member of the organization but the following parties are particularly relevant:
The Copenhagen Municipality in general, DONG Energy, agenda centres, building owners, property companies, developers, credit institutions, solar cell suppliers, hardware producers, co-operative housing societies, housing associations, DSB, HT, Rail Net Denmark, Ørestad Development Corporation, energy consultants, architects, engineers, contractors, environmental organizations, etc.
