| Copenhagen Municipality’s Solar Award 2007 was shared between a visionary district project on the Carlsberg site in Copenhagen and a spectacular photovoltaic end gable in Valby. The prize, which has been initiated as a co-project betweeen the municipality and Solar City Copenhagen, was awarded by the Mayor of the Technical and Environmental Administration, Klaus Bondam.
The Carlsberg Neighbourhood Project is commended by the jury for its spectacular plan involving solar energy and sustainability. The scheme is convincingly carried out, and with great technical credibility. The point of departure was a building owner with ambitious demands for a sustainable district plan and involvement of architect and engineer (Entasis Architects and Esbensen Consulting Engineers) from the very beginning. According to the jury’s report, this initial cooperation has lead to the fusion of architecture and energy-conserving techniques with integrated energy design as the result.
The artist Anita Jørgensen was awarded the prize for having developed an end gable in Valby with photovolatics – a striking example of the promotion of photovoltaics. When it is realized in 2008, the artwork will daily be seen by 400,000 commuters going to and from Copenhagen Central Station. It comprises 120 m2 dead black photovoltaics joined with neon tubes which will light up the façade at night.
The co-project Photovoltaic LED-light in urban space fixtures received Solar City Copenhagen’s special award. It focuses on the development of solar-generated LED products for the urban space. The first products will come on the market in 2008. The project is commended for being “a fine example of the introduction of photovoltaics in urban space, and products which can contribute to the promotion of solar energy to users and passers-by”. The company Out-sider is the manager of the project which counts Faktor 3, Risoe National Laboratory, DONG Energy and Embedit among its participants.
